Orkestar Banitsa

Sunday, July 13 @ 4:00 pm

Q: What IS traditional Balkan music?

A: It is music from Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, and Greece.   It is lively, infectious dance music . . .  and it is often NOT in standard 4/4 time!

You’ll hear traditional folk dance favorites as well as beautiful tunes you’ve never heard and a few band originals in the Balkan style. You’ll be captivated by unique harmonies, exciting and original improvisations, and a powerful groove that will make you want to get up and dance.

Band leader Becky Ashenden has been playing Balkan music (in addition to contradance piano) in a variety of ensembles for over thirty-five years. Bassist Joe Blumenthal, (who also plays in klezmer, Arabic, bluegrass and old-time bands) joined her about 25 years ago, followed by his wife Barbara on Bulgarian tambura. Addie Rose Holland (clarinet and vocals) and Becky’s nephew Gawain Thomas (accordion and percussion) joined the group about 15 years ago.  People make jokes about 2 accordions, but in the Balkans it’s a real tradition that creates a unique and driving sound.

Orkestar Banitsa is:

  • Becky Ashenden – accordion, drums, vocals
  • Addie Rose Holland – clarinet, vocals
  • Gawain Thomas – accordion
  • Barbara Blumenthal – tambura
  • Joe Blumenthal – bass
